Misadventures With My Dad's Linksys Wireless Bridge

A few weekends ago we went to visit my dad in Henderson. It was hot! So when we weren't at the pool we were sitting in the air-conditioning completely mesmerized by his 60 inch HD TV. I noticed that as part of his fancy Samsung Blu-Ray player he could download Netflix directly into his TV. My Dad watches a ton of movies (what else is there to do in Vegas if you don't gamble??) and I've been wanting to experiment with the whole web-connected TV thing. When I explained to my Dad what his TV/DVD player combo could do and the awesomeness of the Netflix service (I watch movies on my computer all the time) he was in for the the experiment!

Dear Blog: Will You Take Me Back?

I've neglected you, blog. I have. I got distracted by the pretty new kid in town. OK, ok, I dumped you for Facebook. I did. But who could blame me? FB - sorry to use a pet name in front of you -- was just so beguiling. I can post pithy little one-liners about my day or what's going on in my life. And people (who call themselves my "friends") post snarky and sometimes even meaningful responses. Immediately. I can browse their status updates at redlights or when I'm bored with the person sitting across from me...It's just fun! I mean, of course, you were fun too... And, yes, it's true FB was the gateway that led me to the Twitter. And, yes...I TWEET! There I said it. I feel better. I know you probably don't like to hear these things but, for goddsakes, your adoptive parents are Google so you know exactly what I've been up to. Don't just sit here pretending you haven't been cataloging my every last move. Tell the truth - you've been stalking me. Every once in awhile you'll pop up in a Google search. I saw you just the other day saying "HELLO?! Remember me????"

That's why I'm here. With a little click of my mouse, I followed you home. I know you quietly watched me as I read over old blog posts, remembering the precious moments I took the time to write down.

Well, I'm here to say I'm back!

I won't give up the fb and the twitter but, we're just friends...I SWEAR!! What do you say, blog? Can you give them a chance? Perhaps, we can all live together happily.

6 month check-in on the New Year's Resolutions

It's been a weird week. Farrah and Michael in the same day. Two icons (not my icons but icons nonetheless) from my childhood buying the farm in the same day. It made me pause to evaluate. I have a good life so what it fueled was a 6 month check-in on my New Year's goals. I'm one of those people that loves New Year's resolutions. It's the opportunity to set new goals and also pat yourself on the head for goals achieved. This year, my meta-goal - or the leitmotif of my goals - is to carve out "me" time. It's probably the wish of everyone. This year, rather than longing for it, I decided to define it and go after it. Three seemingly simple desires:
  • reclaim my body
  • make time to indulge my intellectual curiosity
  • start knocking off items the "I wish I could do this...." list
So how am I doing?

The Prop H8 of it all

Yesterday the CA Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8. I was driving Ella to school in the car listening to KPCC as the news came across the wires at 10am. We listened to the disappointed moans & groans of those on the courthouse steps as the news was delivered that Prop 8 stood. Then we heard the panicked questions, "What about the marriages? What'd they say about the marriages?!" We had to wait a grueling 30 seconds or so to learn the fate of our family's marriage. As we all know, we were grandfathered in along with 18,000 other couples.
Monica and I remain married.
